5 Superfoods and Why You Need Them

If you haven’t heard of the phrase ‘superfood’, where have you been?! Whether you’ve seen your favourite fitness guru Tweeting about their top foods to eat or you’ve read an article on this month’s latest ‘must eat’ meal, it’s hard to escape the idea of superfoods and their benefits.

With so many so called superfoods around, it’s difficult to know which to eat and why. Here are five of the top superfoods and a little bit about why you need them:

1. Almonds

Almonds are a fantastic way to get more calcium into your diet, with very little effort. Almonds are one of the richest sources of calcium available and with close to 23 milligrams per serving, snacking on a handful is an easy way to boost your calcium levels. Plus, almonds are also packed with vitamin E and protein.

2. Avocados

Avocados seem to be everywhere lately and they are definitely one of 2017’s trendiest foods. Avocados are full of fat and though may people try to avoid eating too much fat, this is the ‘good’ kind! They fill you up, boost your levels of monounsaturated fats and have an impressive amount of potassium.

3. Sweet Potato

It’s not always easy to avoid a delicious roast potato or to swap chips for a healthy salad, but have you considered sweet potato? Though a superfood, sweet potato is a fantastic alternative to a lot of carb based foods. Not to mention a single sweet potato is packed full of vitamin C, vitamin B6, fibre, potassium and beta carotene.

4. Salmon

Everyone’s heard of the importance of incorporating omega 3 into their diet. In fact, omega 3 fatty acids are an essential part of any diet. So, remember that salmon is one of the best ways to do it. Salmon has also been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease.

5. Blueberries

It’s hard to deny that blueberries are one of the tastiest fruits out there and so you’ll be pleased to know that they are also a fantastic superfood. They’re rich in many different nutrients, fibre and vitamin C.

Just because superfoods are really good for your body and mind, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t taste great. There are a tonne of recipes available that will help you to incorporate these foods into your favourite meals. Before long, they’ll be part of your daily diet.
